Electric/servo operated emergency brake

Postby 65CrownV8 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:22 pm

Has anyone incorporated an electric/servo operated emergency brake? I've been contemplating this since purchasing a new Ford Edge for my wife. Seems it would save me a lot of frustration dealing with GMs drum in a rotor hat brake.

Recently came up with this idea for SuperVair.

Believe it or not best price is at Kragan/O'reilly.

Unit does not require constant power when on.

And could still be used as a drag racing line lock.

S/V install will be at same time as the power steering.

But if you still have a parking brake cable this is what you're probably talking about.

Actually, no. I was thinking of something along the lines of this:
They are all ECU controlled, but I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe (I'm never that lucky), it may require only a simple signal to engage and another signal to release. No power once the servo rotates the pads together.

Been prowling the local pick-n-pull trying to find a mule on a wreck so I can do some testing. On factory equipped cars, the computer controls the servo, but I'm hoping it's something that can be set and released with a simple reversing of the polarity and no voltage present when set or released. Then there is the caliper mounting issue. Will keep you posted on what I find.

Most states won't permit a hydraulic parking brake. Though I'm comfortable with the idea, living in Florida I would have a really tough time finding a parking spot that isn't level. I carried a couple of rubber tire stops for safety sake when I was in Virginia.

that disk brake caliper with electric servo - what is it used on?
Does that completely replace the hydraulic side of the brakes?

Jay,

The brake caliper is still hydraulic, just the parking brake feature is electrically operated. My wife's 2017 Ford Edge has the electric parking brake, and I believe most of the VW/Audi vehicles use them as well.
