modification to the crown

Postby Bob Sandrock » Wed Sep 09, 2015 8:53 pm

I am interested in getting another crown conversion. I owned one in the 80s but the legroom issue was a real problem. I also want to strengthen the drive train with the c5 diff and possibly the jerico 4 speed. Mike Levine spoke at the registry meeting in Knoxville about the crown being able to provide enough legroom and was interested in how it is done. Also, does anyone have experience with setting the drive train back a few inches? Would it be more cost effective to start from scratch, or modify an existing crown conversion?

Think about an alternate transaxle like Porsche, Audi, Mendeola, Renault...etc etc.

You'll get the strength, modern technology, plus a 5th and or a 6th gear.

Most are expensive but the Porsche Boxter 5 speed is quite reasonable.

See Matt's LS V8 to Mendeola thread below for that combo.

Kennedy Engineered Products is building lots of adapter plates for V8's.

I've looked at the mendeola transaxles, but a 4-speed sequential shift to handle an LS-3 engine is $13k, and I was looking for a less expensive alternative. I could pick up a Jerico 4 speed, and a c5 diff for $3-4k. I liked the legroom possible with the mendeola, but the cost is pretty steep.

It looks like the porsche 996 transaxle can handle the ls motor and is not outrageously priced. Thanks for the info. If I go that route, starting from scratch may be just as cost effective.

The 996 to LS adaptors are available right now from KEP.

"Chevy LS1-LS9 to Porsche 996-911 from '99-05 & Boxster S & Cayman S & 997
This kit uses a gear reduction LS starter and uses the 996 clutch.
We also have high performance clutches for this with wider contact surface than stock."

Phil,

It looks like this adaptor is just for "LS" engines. I wonder if anyone has one for regular old small blocks?

LS isn't the same as old school SBC/BBC?

Does anyone know about rotation when running an LS-3 in front of a 996 transaxle? Does the rotation of the LS match the trans, or do you have to run the motor in reverse rotation?

Phil,

The LS* series isn't the classic 265/283/327/350 small block. It is the 5.0/5.3/6.0 liter newer Chev engine. It has nothing in common with the "classic". It does have lighter weight components and higher performance characteristics.

I realize the LS motor internals are different but the bell housing patterns are the same.

Except of course for the top crown bolt which was never used in the legacy series.

There are sites all over the internet showing LS hung on 4L60, TH450, T10, T5...etc etc.
