HELP!!! Can't get into 1st gear

Postby s7s » Sun Apr 19, 2015 2:37 pm

Need to know if anyone has had any issues shifting into 1st gear. I have a 1968 corvair Kelmark, last year I got into a pothole and broke my Trans. I rebuilt it....new main shaft, synchronizers, and keys, made some adjustments to the linkage with no success. Im fairly sure it's not in the Trans, but I think i'm going take it out again just for peace of mind.

I also have thoughts on the mechanism at the bottom end of the stick shift, has anyone ever had issues with that? It's the original so may be worn out. The car hasn't been driven much until I got it from dad in 2013 and I have replaced a lot of stuff.

Sean,

Sounds like your clutch may not be disengaging. That's where I would start.

Turned out that I put the 1st and 2nd fork in the 3rd and 4th fork hole. It was cold out and those forks came off every time I almost had it together, I just put them back on the way I thought they came off... Should have checked the manual. But now it's correct and shifts very good. Kind of didn't want to post this, a little embarrassing, but someone may run into the same thing some day. The picture has the forks in the correct positions.
