Street disc brakes.

Postby WarWagon » Tue Dec 29, 2015 12:59 pm

The plan for the Crown car's brakes are to at minimum get discs on the front. My mostly stock '65 Corsa will out brake the V8 car everytime.
The drums are in good shape and all hardware and brake shoes, I just need to improve the overall braking of this car and I do not believe it needs discs in the rear too yet.
On a budget seems the Scare bird caliper bracket are the best and cheapest route to start and get there. I have some metric GM calipers and rotors already from other projects. Besides the hydraulic lines and brake pads I think that is all that is needed. Will the Crown brake/clutch master operate discs on front? Would a proportion valve also be needed?

My own research indicates a proportioning valve will not be needed unless the front or rear lock up before the other. My original Crown clutch/brake master cylinder combo (1 ton truck unit) will operate discs OK as the brake piston bore is 1 1/8.
So now it's up to the caliper mount bracket that works with GM G body or S series truck calipers and rotors and two rubber or teflon lined stainless braid brake hoses.

Probably went the best route supported a Corvair enthusiast.
Waiting on my calipers and then on with the small work.

Got the calipers delivered yesterday. Powerstop refurbished GM metric style with new pistons, seals, bleeders and banjo seal washers then they were powder coated red.
I need to pick up 4 bolts and get the hubs turned Image

Install went well. Much better braking and confidence is returned in the drivability.ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Those new brakes from Michael LeVeque look great. Michael is an avid racer; so his kits are race proven. Your pictures sharp and show a lot of detail. Nice job. Stopping should no longer be a problem.

Thank you Sir. Very happy with the performance of the discs so far. Having an actual pedal feel feedback makes the machine much more enjoyable.

Mike should have them in stock, must call him to order and verify. Mike makes his own brackets and I like them better than the Scarebird's now that I'm using them. These brackets work with GM G Body "metric" calipers or S10 series truck calipers as they are the same thing but must use 4wd S10 rotors that pass over the hub. Directly from Mike @ LeVair the brackets, flex hoses and hose clips ran me $200+ shipping. Finding used or a good deal on rotors and calipers will keep the rest of the cost down.
